In the United States, hurricanes mainly affect three areas:

* The Gulf of Mexico, like Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and the west coast of Florida.

* Southern Atlantic States, like The east coast of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.

* The Caribbean, including the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the American Virgin Islands.

It cannot be ruled out, however, that hurricanes affect other states, too. For example, Hurricane Sandy hit New York in 2012, and caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. On the other hand, it is very rare for hurricanes to touch land in the US Pacific states. For example, since 1900, only two tropical storms touched the coast of California. The same can be said of Hawaii, which has not registered a tropical cyclone since the 1950s. However, they are much more frequent and disastrous in Mexico.

Therefore, if you and your family live in one of the aforementioned zones, it is your duty to take the respective precautions to secure your home, and maybe rethink going on vacation during this time.
